Trump's special envoy Jared Kushner met with Hamas leaders in Egypt on Sunday to urge them to fulfill their commitment to disarm. This is the first time Kushner has met with Hamas leaders since signing an agreement to end the war in Gaza last October. The goal of this meeting was to “translate Hamas's obligation to demilitarize Gaza into concrete and verifiable steps.” To maintain the cease-fire in Gaza, these measures include handing over power to a Palestinian technocratic government and ensuring that Hamas plays no role in the future governance of Gaza. The Peace Council hopes that Hamas will begin disarming weapons and military infrastructure, allow the deployment of an international stabilization force and assist in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Gaza, and refrain from stealing or intimidating Palestinians involved in the reconstruction. The committee also hopes that if Hamas begins to disarm, Israel will also carry out a “corresponding withdrawal” from Gaza and speed up the provision of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Sources said Kushner is expected to visit Israel on Monday and meet with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss the “corresponding steps” Israel must take.
