Citing anonymous government officials, the “Korea Economic Daily” said Lotte Chemical recently revealed plans to creditors and the Ministry of Industry of Korea to divest part of its basic chemical business in Malaysia, Indonesia and the United States. Lotte is currently investigating market trends, identifying potential buyers, and formulating specific sales plans. Rakuten plans to complete the business restructuring by divesting its underprofitable overseas business and focusing on high-value-added specialty chemicals. Lotte Chemical Titan, a Malaysian subsidiary of Lotte, was regarded as the primary target of sale; Rakuten spent about 1.5 trillion won to acquire the company in 2010 and held 74.7% of its shares. The company also plans to sell part of LCI's shares to Indonesian sovereign wealth fund BPI Danantara. LCI is Lotte's business entity for the construction of a petrochemical plant in Indonesia, with a project investment of 5.7 trillion won.
