On August 18, during BHP Billiton's 2026 results conference call, in response to recent market rumours that “Canadian uranium miner NexGen Energy says BHP Billiton may negotiate to invest in its uranium project in northern Saskatchewan, Canada,” CEO Brandon Craig responded that the uranium business is mainly a by-product of BHP Billiton's asset portfolio from the Olympic Dam mine in South Australia, and the company currently accounts for about 5% of the global uranium market. He stressed that the core task of BHP Billiton at this stage is to manage the existing business, focus on the current four core commodity investments, and focus on the copper business, including copper growth projects in South Australia, Argentina, and Chile. “Only after these investments are implemented will we further evaluate whether to continue expanding the scale of the uranium business,” Craig said. At the same time, he said that BHP Billiton will not comment on market speculations about investigating other uranium projects in Canada, but will continue to study potential opportunities for other varieties. He said that the company is satisfied with the existing four core categories.
