General Assembly President Spokesman Collins announced on the 18th that Ecuadorian diplomat Ivone Baki is running for the next UN Secretary General. Collins said that Baki's candidacy was nominated by Tonga. Currently, in addition to Baki, there are 7 other people running for the next UN Secretary General: former President Michelle Bachelet of Chile; Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former President of the General Assembly from Ecuador; Rafael Grossi, current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency from Argentina; Reveca Greenspan from Costa Rica; former UN Deputy Secretary General Olara Otunnu from Uganda; and Caroline Rodriguez-Burkett, current Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations; and former President Macky Sall of Senegal. The term of office of the current UN Secretary General Guterres ends on December 31 this year.
