British media revealed on the 19th that senior Iranian officials are already considering a counterattack plan to deal with America's escalating war. Options include attacking US military targets in Europe and destroying the Hormuz Strait of Hormuz submarine fiber-optic cable. The Financial Times reported using two people familiar with the matter within the Iranian government as sources that as the war between the US and Iran reached an impasse, more and more people within the Iranian government believed that the resumption of large-scale US military attacks on Iran “is not a question of whether it will happen, but when.” Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran and military officials have warned that if a new round of full-scale conflict breaks out between the US and Iran, Iran will expand its battlefield, from previously attacking only US military facilities in the Middle East, energy facilities and other infrastructure in the Gulf countries to targeting “farther targets.” The two people familiar with the matter said that “further targets” include US military facilities in south-east European countries such as Bulgaria, and may also affect Cyprus. Another potential target of attack is the Strait of Hormuz submarine cable. The Gulf countries are highly dependent on this optical cable to transmit data across borders. Bulgaria agreed last month to allow the US military to deploy tankers at its southeastern Bezmer air base. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran has warned that any military base used by the US military to attack Iran will be treated by Iran as a legitimate target. According to the Financial Times, theoretically, many regions in Europe are within the range of Iranian missiles. The US “Wall Street Journal” reported in March, citing sources, that Iran fired two medium-range ballistic missiles at the “US-British Joint Military Base” Diego Garcia base located in the Chagos Islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean and about 4,000 kilometers from Iran. Although these two missiles did not hit the target, this move shows that Iran is willing to hit US military targets outside the Middle East region. Siddharth Kaushal, a researcher at the British think tank “The Royal Three Armies Research Institute,” said that the threat posed by Iran's missiles to Europe and other regions is “real but limited.” Kaushal said that Iran can launch medium-range ballistic missiles such as the “Meteor” series against US military facilities in southern and southeastern Europe, but these missiles have limited lethality at a longer range.
