Judo Capital (ASX:JDO) Shares Face Credit Scrutiny After Profit Jump

Simply Wall St·08/19/2026 17:37:48
Listen to the news

Judo Capital Holdings closed at A$1.015 on Wednesday, only modestly higher over the past month and still well below where the stock traded earlier this year. The market has priced in recent volatility. The latest FY26 earnings convey a different message. Net profit after tax reached A$111.1m and the net interest margin improved to 3.13%, supported by a cost to income ratio now in the mid 40s. For a specialist business lender, that margin and efficiency story is the key point, with the share price yet to fully reflect it.

Judo Capital bullish thesis stress test

Bulls argue that Judo Capital is a high growth SME bank with a resilient relationship model that can grow profit while holding margins and costs in check. The FY26 print gives that view some real support. Net profit after tax reached A$111.1m and profit before tax rose to A$286m of pre provision earnings, which shows the core engine is working. Net interest margin of 3.13% and a cost to income ratio of 45.3% point to the margin and efficiency story that fans highlight. Early arrears at 0.39% of gross loans are low and collective provision coverage of 0.93% of loans shows the balance sheet is better cushioned than before. The guidance for broadly stable NIM and an ROE of around 8% in FY27 indicates management believes the business model can absorb recent shocks while still lifting returns.

Credit and concentration fears under the microscope

The bear case centres on credit quality, concentration risk and whether recent impairments are a warning sign rather than a one off. FY26 does not clear that concern. Impairment expense of A$118m, or about 88 bps of average loans, is well above management’s through the cycle cost of risk assumption of 50 bps. Past due and impaired exposures at 2.9% of loans are elevated. Three customers drove the spike in provisions, which confirms that concentrated exposures can move earnings quickly. The June guidance cut and the A$70m to A$80m of problem loans also triggered a sharp share price fall and an institutional holder stepping back below substantial status in late June. That sequence shows how quickly market confidence can fade when credit questions emerge, even as management lifts oversight, tightens controls and increases standardized provision coverage to 1.11% of risk weighted assets.
