On August 20, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung posted a post on a social networking platform in response to US President Trump's statement, saying that he fully agreed with Trump's intention that “South Korea itself is responsible for the security of the Korean Peninsula.” Lee Jae-myung said that South Korea's military strength is “ranked fifth” in the world and is gradually becoming capable of carrying out defense tasks on the Korean Peninsula on its own. Lee Jae-myung also claimed that Trump played the role of a “peacemaker” and compared himself to a “frontrunner,” saying he would do his best to play this role well. He expressed his approval and respect for Trump's demands to reduce the scale of military exercises between the US and South Korea, and looked forward to the resumption of communication between the US and North Korea and the establishment of a peace system on the peninsula. Lee Jae-myung also mentioned that South Korea is willing to cooperate with the US side to participate in actions related to free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and discuss practical contribution plans with the US side to the extent permitted by policy.
