US President Trump said on Wednesday that artificial intelligence may become “more important than the Internet,” calling for regulatory measures that will not slow down the development of the industry and defending the rapid construction of data centers and power plants across the US. “We want regulation, but we want regulation to keep them in the lead,” Trump said during a meeting with cryptocurrency executives and financial regulators at the White House. “This kind of regulation won't kill a very important industry. I think it's probably more important than the internet, more than any industry anyone has ever seen.” Additionally, President Trump has strongly called on AI companies to build power plants to power their data centers rather than rely on existing grids. “Our grids are old, weak, and overwhelmed, so they're building some of the greatest power plants in the world,” he added. “They're actually sending excess electricity to the grid. We're not using electricity from the grid now, but brand new electricity.”
