The German Federal Statistical Office said that due to rising intermediate products and energy costs, the increase in producer prices in Germany in July hit a new high in more than three years, indicating that inflationary pressure is heating up again. Prices charged by manufacturers for products such as food and industrial products rose 3.0% year over year, higher than analysts' estimate of 2.7%. This is the biggest increase in producer prices since April 2023, and is also significantly faster than the 1.8% increase in June. Producer prices in Germany rose 1.1% month-on-month in July. Alexander Kruger, chief economist at Germany's Bettmann Bank, said: “The situation in the early stages of the surge in inflation suddenly became worrying. The effects of the war in Iran are showing, as are the effects of hot weather.” Water levels in the Rhine have been at historically low levels for several weeks, hindering navigation on Germany's most important inland waterway, leading to rising transportation costs. The average price of intermediate products increased by 5.4% compared to the same period last year. Energy prices are also rising at an above average rate, up 3.8% year over year.
