According to reports, hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers fled without permission while participating in military exercises in Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt alone, for example, since 2022, more than 80 Ukrainian soldiers have escaped from local training grounds, and hundreds of similar incidents have been recorded across Germany. According to current Ukrainian law, these people who have evaded military training or service abroad are all defined as “deserters.” Once convicted, they face up to 12 years in prison in their home country.
