Why Is Newmont Stock Surging Friday?

Newmont Corporation (NYSE:NEM) stock traded higher Friday as strong gold prices and a board appointment supported sentiment around the gold miner. Nasdaq futures rose 0.76%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.46%.

Record Gold Prices Support Newmont

Spot gold traded above $4,500 an ounce Friday and headed for a third consecutive weekly gain, according to Trading Economics.

Investors turned to safe-haven assets amid volatility in currency and bond markets. Higher oil prices also fueled inflation concerns and supported demand for gold.

Gold jumped more than 4% Wednesday after the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to double its long-term debt buybacks. The precious metal held much of those gains despite a reversal in Treasury yields.

Central bank purchases, particularly from China, and strong investment demand provided additional support.

Higher bullion prices can benefit miners such as Newmont by increasing the value of the gold they produce and potentially boosting margins and cash flow.

Newmont Adds Former BHP CFO To Board

Newmont announced Thursday that it appointed Peter Beaven to its board of directors, effective Sept. 1.

Beaven is expected to join the Audit Committee and brings decades of finance and mining industry experience.

He served as group chief financial officer of BHP Group Limited (NYSE:BHP) from 2015 to 2021. Beaven also previously served as chairman of the International Copper Association.

Critical Levels To Watch for NEM Stock

Newmont is extended above its major trend gauges, trading 22.7% above the 20-day SMA ($107.40) and 24.2% above the 200-day SMA ($106.11), which tells you the trend is strong but also getting stretched. That “stretched” look matters because it can increase the odds of sharper pullbacks even if the bigger trend stays up.

RSI is the cleaner momentum read right now: at 73.84, it’s in overbought territory, meaning the recent run has been fast enough that buyers may be more selective at current prices.

The moving-average picture is mixed under the hood: the 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA (bullish), but the 50-day SMA is still below the 200-day SMA after the death cross in July.

That combination can happen in early-to-mid trend transitions, where the short-term trend is strong but longer-term participants still want to see the 50-day reclaim the 200-day to fully “clean up” the trend.

  • Key Resistance: $132 — a nearby round-number area just above current price where breakouts can stall
  • Key Support: $107 — a prior pivot zone that sits close to the 20-day SMA area, making it a key “line in the sand” on a deeper pullback

NEM Stock Price Activity: Newmont shares were up 3.08% at $131.57 during premarket trading on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
