AIA Group stock has barely moved over the past week despite a strong set of half year numbers that sharpen the story around profit power rather than top line excitement. The headline is profitability. Operating profit after tax per share rose 13% and the net profit margin over the last twelve months sat at about 31%, well above the prior year. For a life and health insurer that lives or dies on underwriting discipline and capital efficiency, this kind of margin profile is what matters most, even if the share price reaction looks muted for now.

Bulls argue that AIA Group is a high quality pan Asian protection business that can turn growth in new business into compounding profit and cash, supported by disciplined capital returns. The latest half year largely backs that up. Value of new business reached US$3.2b with underlying growth of 14% once the Thailand comparison is stripped out. Protection and participating or unit linked products made up about 96% of VONB, which fits the lower guarantee, more resilient cash flow narrative. Operating profit after tax per share rose 13%, and operating ROE hit a record 17.5%. Net profit margin over the last twelve months was roughly 31%. Free surplus generation was strong, with UFSG at US$3.9b and net free surplus at US$2.8b. A 10% interim dividend increase and US$3.6b returned in the half show cash is reaching shareholders as promised.
Bears worry that AIA Group is over exposed to macro and regulatory shocks in China and Hong Kong, and that distribution or expense pressure will eat into margins. The current results offer a more mixed picture. Hong Kong and Macau VONB reached US$1.2b with a 72% margin, and management reported stronger demand from Mainland visitors despite headlines such as Decree 837 and tax concerns. That pushes back on fears of a sharp break in cross border business. In China, VONB rose 20% with agency VONB up 24%, supporting the idea that Premier Agency remains productive rather than an escalating cost burden. Group VONB margin sat around 57%, and the expense ratio improved to 6.9% over two years, so cost inflation is not yet visible in the numbers. However, the small decline in reported revenue keeps alive questions about how much is pure efficiency versus mix effects.
