NetEase went into this earnings print with the stock up around 11% over the last three months and trading on a premium P/E, priced as one of the higher quality plays in Hong Kong gaming. The market has been paying up for a clean balance between growth and profitability. Today's headline is that profit quality, not just top line, did the heavy lifting.
Q2 revenue came in at RMB 30.1b with games again carrying the story, while group gross margin reached 70.5%. Non GAAP net income attributable to shareholders of RMB 7.7b underlined that NetEase is still converting its gaming scale into sizeable cash earnings.

The bullish story on NetEase is that self developed games, refreshed evergreen franchises and AI tools keep users spending for longer and at higher margins, while global titles gain traction. Q2 results give this some backing. Online games revenue of RMB 24.5b grew around 10% YoY and helped lift group gross margin to 70.5%, which supports the claim of high margin franchise strength rather than one off hits. Eggy Party at over 700m registered users and more than 100m MAU shows the user generated content push is gaining scale, and anniversary peaks in Sword of Justice and NARAKA point to effective live operations rather than aging IP.
The AI angle is also moving from story to execution. Youdao’s Confucius 4 and AI infused tools in Eggy Party’s editor are concrete products, and management is explicitly tying AI to faster development and richer in game content rather than leaving it as a vague promise.
Compare NetEase’s higher margin franchises and AI roll out with what the market is actually pricing in. Reveal whether analysts think SEHK:9999 can justify this premium by checking the consensus price target analysis for NetEase. The bearish view on NetEase is that heavy R&D and global marketing will erode earnings, while structural headwinds keep revenue growth modest. This quarter gives that concern some footing. H1 2026 profit fell 6.6% year on year to RMB 17.7b even with 7% revenue growth to RMB 60.7b. Q2 non GAAP net income of RMB 7.7b and a higher effective tax rate of 25.5% show that more of the top line is not translating into bottom line progress. R&D held at about 15.4% of revenue, so the investment cycle is clearly in motion.
At the same time, feared margin damage is not yet visible. Group gross margin improved to 70.5%, helped by lower platform revenue share. That contradicts the idea of an immediate margin squeeze, but the missed milestone is clear. Profit growth is lagging revenue while spending and tax burdens stay elevated.
