The US State Department issued a statement on the 21st saying that it has approved the sale of 125 million US dollars worth of “Diamondback” air-to-air missiles and related equipment services to South Korea. The statement said that the South Korean government proposed to purchase 103 AIM-9X “Diamondback” Block II tactical missiles and 10 sets of tactical guidance components for this type of missile, as well as related accessories and services. The proposed arms sale “will enhance South Korea's air defense and deterrence capabilities,” “ensure cooperative combat capability with the US military,” and help South Korea improve its “ability to deal with current and future threats.” According to the official website of the US Naval Air Systems Command, the AIM-9X “Diamondback” Block II missile is the most advanced short-range air-to-air missile currently in service by the US military, and can also be used to attack ground targets. Furthermore, the US State Department also issued separate statements on the same day announcing approval of foreign arms sales cases against Norway and Italy. The United States will sell 21 UH-60M “Black Hawk” helicopters and related engines and other equipment to the Norwegian government, with a total value of about US$2.3 billion; it will sell 5031 sets of “Advanced Precise Weapons System-II” air-to-air guidance components and related equipment to the Italian government, with a total value of about US$364 million.
