Anthropic PBC has hired Amir Salek, founder of Google's custom chip project, to prepare the AI lab to enter the field of self-developed semiconductors. The Claude platform developer said on Friday that Salek will join Anthropic's computing power team and report to James Bradbury. Salek was responsible for Google's tensor processing unit business until 2022, and participated in the launch of the first seven generations of TPU chips. Anthropic currently purchases chips from various vendors such as Nvidia, Google, and Amazon, but has recently released the will to establish its own chip business. The San Francisco-based company has begun recruiting for related projects and posting job postings. Like other AI giants, Anthropic is stepping up access to sufficient data center infrastructure to support its growth goals. Self-developed chips are expected to help the company cope with supply shortages while customizing chip designs according to its own needs. Competitor OpenAI is taking similar action. The ChatGPT developer has released the Jalapeno chip co-developed with Broadcom and plans to start using it later this year.
