On August 21, local time, the US Department of Justice announced that it had reached a $400 million settlement agreement with TikTok, ByteDance, and its associated entities to resolve lawsuits relating to their compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and its implementing rules. According to the settlement agreement, TikTok will immediately pay 300 million US dollars and pay another 100 million US dollars after the court rescues the previous consent order against TikTok's predecessor Musical.ly. The settlement is one of the largest amounts of compensation received so far in the COPPA case. The lawsuit began in August 2024. At the time, the US Department of Justice and the US Federal Trade Commission jointly sued TikTok Inc., ByteDance Ltd. and their associated entities, alleging that they still allow children to create regular TikTok accounts and collect and retain personal information without notifying or obtaining parental consent even when users are under 13.
