Penang ferry services record 7.28% growth in first half of 2026

PENANG: Passenger ferry services in Penang continues to show positive development throughout the first half of 2026.

According to the chairman of the Penang Port Commission (SPPP), Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, ferry operations from January to June 2026 recorded a 7.28% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

In June alone, total ferry traffic reached 262,424 passengers, comprising 199,861 pedestrians, 622 cyclists, and 61,941 motorcyclists. These figures clearly reflect the sustained demand for ferry services as a key mode of public transportation in the state.

Yeoh noted that in conjunction with recent national celebrations, SPPP offered free ferry rides on the day of the festivities.

This initiative not only facilitated the movement of residents and visitors but also provided the public with the opportunity to experience Penang’s ferry services, while raising awareness of the importance of public transport.

The offered period free-fare initiatives during festive occasions serve to encourage public transport usage, which is in line with the mission of the Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He emphasised that ferry services continue to serve as an important connector for multicultural communities, attracting passengers from various states and countries. This diversity reinforces the ferry’s role in supporting the local economy, promoting cultural exchange, and encouraging domestic tourism.

Yeoh expressed hope that this positive momentum will be sustained through continuous improvements in service frequency, cleanliness, and safety.
