According to a report by RIA Novosti on August 23, Rahimi, president of the Islamic Parliament News Agency, said that Tehran has received an official invitation to join the “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement” recently signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Lebanon's “Plaza” TV quoted him as reporting: “The Iranian leadership is currently considering this proposal.” The trilateral agreement was signed on August 7. It provides for the strengthening of collective deterrence, and an armed attack against any party shall be regarded as a joint attack on all three countries. The document also allows for the expansion of military cooperation, coordination, and joint projects in the defense industry. After signing the agreement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the agreement does not target any country and is open to other countries in the region committed to peace, stability and prosperity.
