Eni Targets Europe Commercial Fusion Plant Launch by Early 2040s

05:45 AM EDT, 08/24/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Eni (ENI.MI) is seeking to open a commercial fusion plant in Europe by the early 2040s or sooner, London's Financial Times reported Sunday, citing Francesca Ferrazza, head of magnetic fusion initiatives at the Italian oil major. Ferrazza noted growing competition in the fusion industry, with Eni aiming to become one of the first energy companies to commercialize fusion in Europe. US startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems, in which Eni holds a stake, would develop the plant. Eni did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
