According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung urged on August 25 to reach a consensus on lowering the age of criminal responsibility for minors as soon as possible and push for relevant legislation. Lee Jae-myung said while presiding over the State Council at Cheongwadae that morning, “This problem seems to have been going on for too long.” He summarized the current direction of discussion on the age standard for criminal responsibility of minors. “The scope for lowering the age of criminal responsibility for repeat offenses has been determined, and the reduction is within 1 to 2 years”, and called for “understanding once again what the public views are on this, making decisions and promoting legislation as soon as possible.”
