One thing we could say about the analysts on GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai) Inc. (HKG:2595) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with the analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon. The stock price has risen 8.5% to HK$32.34 over the past week. Investors could be forgiven for changing their mind on the business following the downgrade; but it's not clear if the revised forecasts will lead to selling activity.
Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the four analysts covering GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai), is for revenues of CN¥121m in 2026, which would reflect a small 7.3% reduction in GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai)'s sales over the past 12 months. The loss per share is anticipated to greatly reduce in the near future, narrowing 75% to CN¥1.21. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of CN¥169m and CN¥1.06 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target was broadly unchanged at CN¥43.34, perhaps implicitly signalling that the weaker earnings outlook is not expected to have a long-term impact on the valuation. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. The most optimistic GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai) analyst has a price target of CN¥52.22 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at CN¥30.17. This shows there is still some diversity in estimates, but analysts don't appear to be totally split on the stock as though it might be a success or failure situation.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 7.3% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2026. That is a notable change from historical growth of 24% over the last year. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 22% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai) is expected to lag the wider industry.
The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai). Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai)'s revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on GenFleet Therapeutics (Shanghai) after the downgrade.
