Qfin Holdings just gave investors a harsh reminder that cheap can always get cheaper. The stock dropped almost 19% to $9.35 after Q2 earnings laid bare how quickly profit can reset in a stressed China consumer credit market. Non GAAP net income landed at RMB 455m, while basic earnings per share came in at RMB 3.33.
For a stock already down sharply over the past month and quarter, the headline is simple: profitability is being squeezed at the same time management is flagging a tougher second half. The rest of the earnings story explains why the market reacted this hard.

Bulls argue Qfin will use its AI driven platform and B2B tech to keep credit losses in check, reduce costs and build higher quality, recurring revenue. The quarter gives partial support. Core risk metrics improved in Q2. The 90 day delinquency ratio fell to 2.83% from 3.5%, 30 day collection rates improved to 88.1% and C2M2, which tracks roll rates after 30 days past due, eased to 0.66%. Provision coverage for 90 to 180 day delinquencies reached a high 472%, which points to a cautious buffer rather than aggressive accounting. Tech solutions volume reached RMB 10.5b and grew very strongly year on year, which is consistent with the B2B push. However, non GAAP net profit of RMB 455m almost halved sequentially and Q3 guidance of RMB 400 to 500m shows earnings are not yet benefitting in a visible way from these positives.
Bears worry that Qfin is trapped in a weaker China consumer credit cycle, with higher provisions, tighter regulation and a more capital intensive model crushing margins. Q2 backs up several of those concerns. Non GAAP net profit of RMB 455m fell sharply versus Q1 and management guides to another weak quarter, with Q3 non GAAP net income expected at only RMB 400 to 500m, down more than 67% year on year. New provisions on risk bearing loans reached RMB 1.72b and the new provision ratio of 5.36% is the highest level in Qfin’s history. Management also expects funding costs to rise in the second half while keeping loan volumes below Q2 levels to protect asset quality. Early August data already show first payment delinquencies and C2M2 moving higher again, which suggests asset quality is not yet on a stable path.
