HealthEquity stock has shaken off a weak August and snapped back with a 3.2% one day jump to US$96.37, even as the 7 day and 30 day returns remain in decline. The market is reacting strongly to one factor: profit power. Q2 delivered US$65.6 million in GAAP net income and a record adjusted EBITDA margin of 48%, which is rare territory for a healthcare benefits platform.
The question now is whether this surge reflects a measured response to improving profitability or investors crowding into the story after the headline numbers.

Bulls argue that HealthEquity is scaling a durable HSA platform with rising operating leverage and deeper member engagement. Q2 hits several of those checkpoints. Adjusted EBITDA margin reached 48%, up from 46%, while service cost per account fell and human handled calls declined 25%. That backs the claim that AI and automation are starting to lower unit costs. On the growth side, total HSAs reached 10.7 million, new HSAs from sales grew 24%, and HSA assets rose 14%, which lines up with the idea of a structurally expanding base. Engagement metrics are moving in the right direction as well, with monthly active app users at 1.4 million, up 62%, and invested HSA balances up 28%. Raised FY2027 guidance for revenue, earnings and EBITDA further supports the view that the profit engine is strengthening rather than stalling.
Bears focus on cyclicality, pricing pressure and execution risk around new products and AI. Q2 only partly addresses those concerns. Custodial revenue of US$175.9 million and a guided HSA cash yield of 3.85% to 3.90% show that interest income remains a key earnings driver, and management still highlights rate and yield uncertainty as a risk. Competitive fee pressure is very much alive, with explicit references to price erosion and the need to pass savings to clients, which could cap future margin gains. Marketplace and the next generation app are still early, with about 14,000 active Marketplace members, so there is not yet clear proof that these features can materially diversify revenue. At the same time, record GAAP and non GAAP earnings, plus US$108 million of buybacks, do not validate fears of near term profit compression or cash flow strain.
With HealthEquity leaning heavily on interest sensitive custodial revenue and stepping up buybacks, many investors are asking whether liquidity and debt capacity comfortably cover future investment plans.
