Japanese Cash Flow Stocks Trading Below Fair Value

Simply Wall St·08/30/2026 08:23:33
Listen to the news

Rising government bond yields across major economies are putting fresh pressure on equity valuations, especially for companies whose prices already assume strong future growth. That creates a window for investors who prefer solid cash generation at discounted prices. This article focuses on undervalued stocks based on cash flows and highlights three companies from the SWS DCF screener that currently combine strong cash flow potential with attractive valuations.

The three stocks below are a starting sample from this idea. The full DCF-based screen currently highlights 58 more companies with similarly compelling cash flow stories that are not covered here. If you want to identify potential opportunities for your own watchlist, head straight into the Undervalued Stocks Based On Cash Flows screener

Chugai Pharmaceutical (TSE:4519)

Chugai Pharmaceutical is a Japan based pharma group that researches, develops and sells prescription drugs globally, with a heavy focus on oncology and complex biologics such as Alecensa, Avastin, Herceptin, Kadcyla, Polivy, Tecentriq and Vabysmo that can generate recurring cash flows aligned with the cash flow focused screener theme. Almost all of its ¥1,342,809 million revenue comes from pharmaceuticals, and the company has a market cap of about ¥11,571.4 billion.

Chugai Pharmaceutical earns attention in a cash flow focused screen because its oncology and biologics portfolio already supports substantial recurring revenue, yet the stock is assessed as trading well below an SWS DCF estimate of fair value. Recent half year sales of ¥566,487 million and net income of ¥231,749 million show why its cash generation matters, especially as management guides to ¥1,345,000 million of 2026 revenue and has raised the interim dividend. The interest is not one sided, though. Heavy reliance on a handful of flagship drugs and exposure to pricing and regulatory pressure mean the durability of those cash flows is a key factor for any investor weighing the apparent valuation gap.

Recurring oncology cash flows may only be half of Chugai Pharmaceutical's story, with the current valuation gap hinting at something investors have not fully priced in. Get the full context in the 3 key rewards and 1 important warning sign

Furukawa Electric (TSE:5801)

Furukawa Electric is a diversified Japanese industrial group that supplies everything from automotive wire harnesses and power cables to semiconductor materials and copper products. Its Optical Solutions and Digital Infrastructure Components are the clearest fit for a cash flow focused investor. These telecom and data center products, including optical fiber, cables, connectors and fusion splicers, are designed for long project cycles that can support recurring cash generation. The company reports segment level figures such as Segment Adjustment revenue of ¥1,375,024 million and Service, Development, Etc. revenue of ¥43,784 million, and has a market cap of roughly ¥2,745.7 billion.

Investors looking at Furukawa Electric are really looking at whether the market is underestimating the value of its fiber and data center cash flows. The stock is priced below an SWS DCF estimate of fair value, while earnings are forecast to grow at roughly 19.27% a year and recent guidance points to stronger demand for data center related products in Optical Solutions and Digital Infrastructure Components. At the same time, heavy capex plans and debt coverage that is not fully supported by operating cash flow, plus past one off items, mean investors need to separate the recurring telecom and data center cash engine from the noise. If that underlying cash stream proves as durable as management’s capacity expansions suggest, the current discount could look very different in hindsight.

Furukawa Electric's fibre and data center cash engine may be stronger than its share price suggests, yet heavy capex and mixed cash coverage raise big questions. Get the full story in the 3 key rewards and 3 important warning signs (2 are major!)

Murata Manufacturing (TSE:6981)

Murata Manufacturing is a global supplier of ceramic based electronic components and modules that sit inside smartphones, cars, data centers and industrial equipment, with cash flow largely anchored in high volume capacitors, inductors, RF modules and connectivity modules. These core product lines sit within the Components segment, which generates about ¥1,250.6 billion of revenue, alongside ¥664.8 billion from Devices and Modules and ¥71.5 billion from Others. With a market cap of roughly ¥13,464.7 billion, Murata is a heavyweight in the electronics supply chain. Its recurring component sales align closely with the Undervalued Stocks Based On Cash Flows theme.

Murata Manufacturing offers a mix of scale, recurring component sales and a stock price that the SWS DCF framework currently assesses as about 29.3% below estimated fair value. The core of the story is the cash coming from capacitors, inductors and RF and connectivity modules that feed into 5G, automotive and industrial demand. These help support forecast earnings growth of roughly 24.41% a year and a rising dividend profile. At the same time, exposure to semiconductor cycles, currency swings and supply chain shifts means those cash flows are not risk free. The key question is whether the stability of Murata’s components engine justifies looking past those swings. The detailed risks and rewards work aims to address this.

Murata Manufacturing’s scale in capacitors and RF modules is only half the picture. The real question is how that cash engine lines up against expectations in the analyst forecasts for Murata Manufacturing that hints at one crucial swing factor investors often miss.
