Xiji County, Guyuan City, Ningxia, is located at the foot of Liupan Mountain. It has a resident population of less than 400,000, yet it raises 600,000 cows. In the past, farmers piled cow dung on their doorstep, which had a pungent smell and polluted the environment. Today, the local community is exploring the “cow dung bank” model: unified acquisition, storage of cow dung, processing it into organic fertilizer and then selling it. This practice not only solved the problem of environmental pollution, but also boosted farmers' income growth. Walking into this special “bank,” cow dung has its own “trading method”: not only can cow dung organic fertilizer be sold directly for 40 yuan per cubic meter, but it can also be “stored”; it can also be exchanged for 2 cubic meters of wet cow dung for 1 cubic meter of organic fertilizer when needed. The “Cow Dung Bank” collects about 100,000 cubic meters of cow dung every year and can produce about 30,000 tons of commercial organic fertilizer. In addition to supplying locally, these organic fertilizers are also gradually opening up foreign markets. According to the head of the enterprise, about 7,000 tons of organic fertilizer are currently sold to orchards in Gansu, Shaanxi and other places every year, with sales reaching 4 million yuan. With the promotion of the “cow dung bank” model, export orders are increasing year by year, and the product has formed a stable customer base in surrounding provinces.
