As one of the first large-scale estimates of economic losses caused by the conflict, the London Lloyd's Insurance Market predicts that the US-Iran war will cause losses of 1.4 billion pounds to the Gulf region. Although attacks on ships continue to occur in the Strait of Hormuz, Lloyd's CEO Patrick Tiernan said the losses were mainly due to damage to land-based infrastructure, triggering extensive political violence and terrorist insurance claims. Since the US and Israel attacked Iran's Tehran at the end of February, Iran has used drones and missiles to attack energy facilities and other critical infrastructure in the region. Tiernan said that in comparison, this 1.4 billion pounds accounts for about a quarter of Lloyd's cumulative losses under the Russian-Ukrainian war since the Russian-Ukrainian conflict fully broke out in 2022. Tiernan said that the biggest loss in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict comes from the impact of sanctions; in the Gulf region, insurance companies under Lloyd's are more exposed to risk due to infrastructure damage.
