The market gave Waterdrop a polite nod, not a standing ovation. The stock ticked up about 5% to US$1.07 after earnings, even though the headline result was a powerful revenue surge to CNY 1,448m and the company booked its eighteenth straight profitable quarter.
Investors came in with a bargain story in mind, with the shares trading on a low trailing P/E and a weak 90 day return. The fresh twist is that this growth now relies on heavier sales and marketing spend, which squeezes profit even as the top line accelerates.

Bulls argue Waterdrop can use AI and aggressive customer acquisition to grow into its heavier spending and still protect profitability. The latest quarter gives real support to that story. Net operating revenue rose sharply while operating profit still reached about CNY 111m, which means the business stayed in the black even as sales and marketing climbed to roughly CNY 638m. Insurance revenue of CNY 1.33b and a 32.3% sequential rise in newly acquired customers show the growth engine is actually pulling in users, not just clicks. Management points to nearly CNY 100m in first year premium sourced through AI tools and 18 straight profitable quarters. That combination of volume expansion, AI linked FYP contribution and continued dividends plus buybacks is exactly the milestone set bulls wanted to see, even if earnings per share dipped year on year.
The sceptical view is that Waterdrop is buying growth, with AI and traffic spend pressuring earnings and leaving little room for error. This quarter does not dismiss that concern. Total operating costs and expenses climbed faster than revenue, up 80.5% versus 72.8%, and net profit excluding extra items fell 10.3% year on year despite the strong top line. Sales and marketing outlay rose by about CNY 450m on public domain and third party channels, showing competitive intensity is forcing a higher acquisition bill. R&D increased as AI cloud and token usage expanded, and G&A was pushed up by larger credit loss allowances. Insurance metrics like 33.4% sequential FYP growth for long term products look healthy, yet the lower EPS and thinner operating profit growth relative to revenue validate bears’ worries that execution on AI and customer growth is coming through the income statement as compressed margins.
