ExxonMobil Holdings Corp (NYSE:XOM) shares are trading lower on Thursday as the Energy sector slides 0.8% and the S&P 500 is down 0.4%. There is no specific company-related news today.
• ExxonMobil Holdings stock is trading at elevated levels. Where are XOM shares going?
On Tuesday, the company disclosed that its wholly owned subsidiary, Pioneer Natural Resources Company, is launching cash tender offers to purchase certain outstanding senior notes.
Pioneer Natural Resources is offering to purchase for cash any and all outstanding $1.1 billion of 1.900% Senior Notes due 2030 and $1 billion of 2.150% Senior Notes due 2031.
Holders participating in the tender offers will receive consideration based on the applicable Reference Yield and Fixed Spread, along with accrued interest.
ExxonMobil’s longer-term trend still looks constructive: the stock is trading about 1.4% above its 20-day SMA ($161.90) and roughly 12.9% above its 200-day SMA ($145.42), with bullish 20-over-50 and 50-over-200 moving-average structure. That said, the MACD is below its signal line with a negative histogram, which is a classic "momentum cooling" setup that can lead to consolidation unless buyers push back quickly.
From a levels standpoint, the chart is still closer to resistance than support, so follow-through matters if the market stays heavy.
ExxonMobil is outperforming its sector on Thursday, down less than the broader Energy group’s 0.83% decline (a 0.64 percentage-point edge). Even so, Energy is ninth out of 11 sectors today, so relative strength is happening inside a weak pocket of the market.
Zooming out, the sector trend has been positive recently, up 6.27% over the past 30 days and 12.51% over the past 90 days, which helps explain why ExxonMobil remains extended above its longer-term moving averages. The near-term question is whether that leadership can reassert itself if the market’s risk-off tone persists through the session.
Looking further out, the next major catalyst for the stock arrives with the Oct. 30, 2026 (estimated) earnings report.
