The cost of transporting diesel and gasoline along the river has risen again due to the fact that the water level in the Kaub section, the key mouth of the Rhine, continues to be at a historically low level. According to forecasts, the water level in this section of the river will drop to 19 centimeters on September 15, and the waterway will be almost impassable at that time. River shipping company Riverlake pointed out that currently the barges sailing from Rotterdam to Kaub can only carry about 254 tons of cargo, which is only one-tenth of the standard cargo capacity. The company warned that limited capacity will continue to drive up Rhine freight prices. The data showed that diesel barge freight rates from Rotterdam to Switzerland rose to more than 228 euros per ton on Thursday, a record high since August 20, but still below the historical peak this summer.
