Insider Purchases Worth US$507.8k See Losses As Cadiz Market Value Drops To US$309m

Listen to the news

Insiders who acquired US$507.8k worth of Cadiz Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CDZI) stock at an average price of US$4.58 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 12% price decline. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only US$404.7k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Cadiz Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Dave O'Hara for US$508k worth of shares, at about US$4.58 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$3.65). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Dave O'Hara was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. From our data, it seems that Cadiz insiders own 2.4% of the company, worth about US$7.5m. We do note, however, it is possible insiders have an indirect interest through a private company or other corporate structure. We do generally prefer see higher levels of insider ownership.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Cadiz Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. We'd like to see bigger individual holdings. However, we don't see anything to make us think Cadiz insiders are doubting the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
