According to the Financial Times, citing a letter to the ECB Executive Committee, the ECB Staff Committee has asked the leadership to clarify whether President Christine Lagarde will step down before the end of her term. The staff council said “long-term uncertainty” could damage public trust in the agency. The media quoted people familiar with the matter as reporting that it is expected that the World Economic Forum will decide on the next permanent chairman by November, and Lagarde is a popular candidate. An ECB spokesperson said, “The ECB has long and perfect institutional governance arrangements and deep expertise to ensure its smooth operation during the transition period, as evidenced by past reforms.” Both Lagarde and the World Economic Forum declined to comment through a spokesperson.
