US Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he is “open” to studying the ban on diesel exports as the average price of diesel exceeds $6 per gallon across the US. In response to questions from reporters, he said, “We will consider all possible solutions. I think if there is sufficient domestic supply, but diesel is still being exported to the outside world, this may be a way to ease the pressure on prices. If this move reduces the pressure on price increases, I am willing to look into this plan.” Diesel and chemically similar household heating oil have recently surpassed gasoline, impacting key swing states in the November midterm congressional elections. Thun said that compared to the plan proposed by Texas Senate candidate and Democrat James Talarick to suspend the diesel tax, the export ban might be more feasible in his opinion. Thun said he wasn't sure what the Trump administration thought about the export ban.
