The Zhitong Finance App learned that chip maker Altera, supported by private equity giant Silver Lake Capital and Intel (INTC.US), announced on Tuesday that it has secretly submitted an initial public offering (IPO) application to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to officially begin the process of returning to the open market. As the AI investment boom continues to drive the valuation and financing needs of chip and related infrastructure companies, Altera has also become the latest semiconductor company seeking to use the AI wave to enter the capital market.
According to Altera's announcement on Tuesday, the company has yet to determine the number of shares to be issued in this IPO and the issuance price range, and the listing time and final financing scale are yet to be further disclosed.
Altera mainly produces programmable chips, and its product applications cover artificial intelligence, industrial automation, and robotics. As demand for AI computing grows rapidly and the industrial and robotics fields accelerate the introduction of intelligent technology, the company's programmable chip market has attracted investors' attention.
Altera's history dates back to 1983. In 2015, Intel bought Altera for approximately $16.7 billion, hoping to strengthen its presence in the field of programmable chips. Since then, Altera has been part of the Intel system for a long time.
However, Altera's shareholding structure has undergone significant changes in recent years. Last year, Silverlake Capital acquired 51% of Altera's shares and acquired a controlling interest in the company, while Intel continues to retain the remaining shares. Subsequently, MGX, an investment company backed by Abu Dhabi, also joined the deal.
Now secretly submitting an IPO application, it means that Altera is moving further into an independent capital market after experiencing the acquisition of Intel and the entry of Silver Lake Capital.
It is worth noting that Altera is advancing its IPO at a time when the US IPO market is clearly heating up. The AI investment boom has taken the capital market by storm, and investors' interest in semiconductors, computing power infrastructure, and other AI-related companies continues to rise, creating a favorable environment for the listing and financing of related companies.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, after excluding special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) and other financial instruments, US initial public offerings have raised a total of US$16.6 billion since 2026. According to the current funding rate, 2026 is expected to be the largest year for US IPOs since the boom in IPOs during the pandemic.
Altera's current IPO has received particular attention. On the one hand, it is due to its relationship with Intel and Silverlake Capital, and on the other hand, its business directly covers popular fields in the current capital market, such as AI, industrial automation, and robotics.
However, at present, Altera has not announced the number of shares to be issued, valuation targets, and financing scale, so there is still great uncertainty about the final scale of this IPO. As the confidential filing process progresses, the market will now focus on the company's official public offering documents as well as information such as valuation, financial performance, and specific listing dates.
