The US Coast Guard confirmed Tuesday evening that US military personnel and FBI agents boarded an oil tanker bound for Texas to investigate a cyber attack. In response to media inquiries, a Coast Guard spokesperson said that there are signs that the foreign ship's network system was invaded by overseas cyber forces, and relevant personnel boarded the ship on August 21 to launch an investigation. According to ship tracking data, this oversized crude oil tanker called “VL Prosperity” is currently docked near the coastal town of Galveston in Texas. The coast guard said that the tanker captain, crew and shore personnel all cooperated with the investigation, and that the incident did not cause any interruptions in operations or injuries. The agency said, “The Coast Guard is actively communicating with port operators, shipowners and local maritime stakeholders to ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation of port operations.” Iran's semi-official media Meher News Agency reported in late August that communication with the “VL Prosperity” was interrupted for 30 hours after a cyber attack in the Strait of Gibraltar.
