The European Federation of Feed Producers said in a statement that the EU's 2026-27 sales year could be close to 5 million tons of soybean meal supply gap, accounting for about 20% of its total demand. Alternative materials that can fill this gap are limited. “Severe droughts, disruptions in trade in the Black Sea, and restrictions on procurement of raw materials under EU timber regulations are compounding the EU feed industry chain.” Currently, it is estimated that the procurement of soybeans, rapeseed and sunflower meal that meets the requirements of EU timber regulations for feed production will increase the cost by 1.4 billion euros. This will directly result in an increase in the cost of pork by around €40 per ton and poultry by €15 per ton.
