The 2026 Article IV agreement negotiation statement issued by the International Monetary Fund made clear suggestions on Australia's monetary policy direction: “Bringing the inflation rate back to the target range should be a priority in the near future. Monetary policy should continue to focus on containing the risk of inflation.” The IMF pointed out that given the continuing underlying inflationary pressure and still facing huge uncertainty about whether financial conditions are sufficiently austerity, the Reserve Bank of Australia should be prepared to raise interest rates if necessary.
