On September 17, Google announced a partnership with Swedish steel company Stegra to promote the commissioning of its large-scale green hydrogen-based near-zero emission steel plant in Boden, Sweden. Stegra will use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen and treat iron ore with hydrogen instead of coal. According to the agreement, Google will obtain environmental certification corresponding to a maximum of 910,000 tons of steel for steel produced by Stegra in the first year. Google expects that using materials such as low-carbon steel for data center infrastructure can reduce its hidden carbon emissions by up to 40%.
