Anthropic’s Drug Discovery Bet Gets Real: AI Startup Sets Up Physical Biology Lab

Anthropic is taking its push into life sciences out of the cloud and into the lab. The artificial intelligence startup has established a physical biology facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, marking a deeper move into hands-on experimentation as it expands its work in drug research.

Two people familiar with the plans told Reuters that Anthropic had built a wet lab. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the company’s life sciences leader, confirmed the facility in an interview with the news agency.

"We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work," Kauderer-Abrams said.

Anthropic is combining its own laboratory work with external collaborations, a model similar to how many biotechnology companies operate, Kauderer-Abrams said. A company spokesperson later clarified that the facility is not specifically dedicated to drug discovery and declined to provide further details.

The move comes as Anthropic explores how its Claude AI models can be applied to biology, including efforts aimed at developing treatments for rare diseases. The company has emphasized that it wants to move beyond purely computational research and test AI-generated ideas through real-world experiments.

"The mission of the company is to develop powerful AI in such a way that benefits the world," Kauderer-Abrams said.

Anthropic is also exploring AI-driven laboratory automation. People familiar with the effort said Claude models can help operate automated lab systems, with robots carrying out experiments while humans remain involved to oversee safety. 

"We’re in the very early innings of using AI to automate the execution of lab work," he said.

Anthropic first publicly outlined its plans for drug research at a San Francisco event in June. Kauderer-Abrams said the company intended to focus on preclinical programs in areas that may not offer enough commercial incentive for traditional drugmakers.

The company is not conducting clinical trials, he said, adding that Anthropic does not intend to compete directly with pharmaceutical and biotech companies whose businesses center on bringing drugs to market.

The company’s hiring activity suggests the effort is becoming more operational. Anthropic has advertised for a leader to expand procurement and operations, while other openings have sought expertise in areas including protein and nucleic acid characterization. One job listing said the company aims to "speed up progress in the life sciences by an order of magnitude."

Anthropic has also been building tools to connect AI with physical laboratory systems. In August, it introduced the Model Hardware Standard, aimed at making it easier for AI systems to interact with laboratory equipment.

At the same time, the company is working with established drugmakers on AI applications. Anthropic provides AI services to companies including Roche’s Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk.

The expansion into physical biology gives Anthropic another avenue for putting increasingly capable AI systems to work — while also raising the stakes around how those systems are used in sensitive scientific settings.
