On the 18th, Ecuadorian firefighters, with helicopter support, fought a wildfire on a mountain near the capital Quito. Dozens of people have been evacuated. Quito City Fire Department official Pablo Andino told AFP that the wildfire occurred on Mount Casitagua in northern Quito city. Four helicopters were sent to the mountain to help put out the fire, and about 100 firefighters struggled to control two fire spots on the ground. Andino said the area was “full of shrubs and trees, and the fire spread very fast due to gusts of wind” and that firefighters were “at great risk.”
