Whilst it may not be a huge deal, we thought it was good to see that the MA Financial Group Limited (ASX:MAF) Independent Non-Executive Director, Simon Columb Kelly, recently bought AU$126k worth of stock, for AU$5.03 per share. While we're hesitant to get too excited about a purchase of that size, we do note it increased their holding by a solid 20%.
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Co-Founder & Group Executive Vice Chairman, Andrew Pridham, for AU$4.7m worth of shares, at about AU$7.62 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is AU$4.92. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 72.36k shares worth AU$440k. But insiders sold 1.42m shares worth AU$10m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of MA Financial Group shares, than buying. The sellers received a price of around AU$7.06, on average. It is certainly not great to see that insiders have sold shares in the company. However, we do note that the average sale price was significantly higher than the current share price (which is AU$4.92). I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that MA Financial Group insiders own 34% of the company, worth about AU$296m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging. The recent buying by an insider , along with high insider ownership, suggest that MA Financial Group insiders are fairly aligned, and optimistic. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example, MA Financial Group has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
