Australian Prime Minister Albanis announced at the UN headquarters in New York on September 20, local time, that Australia will officially run for the 2029-2030 non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council and simultaneously launch an election campaign to compete for one of the two seats in its regional group. The last time Australia was a non-permanent member of the Security Council was in 2013-2014. Albanis said he expects “strong support” from Pacific Island countries and ASEAN. He also added that the “strong relationships” he has established with the leaders of many countries will help improve Australia's chances of winning.
