Insiders who bought HK$10.9m worth of Unity Enterprise Holdings Limited (HKG:2195) stock in the last year recovered part of their losses as the stock rose by 15% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be a costly gamble, since losses made by insiders have totalled HK$2.4m since the time of purchase.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Kin Wai Yuen bought HK$11m worth of shares at a price of HK$0.39 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$0.30). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Kin Wai Yuen.
