From YouTube Tutorials to AI Music Coaches: How Technology Is Transforming the Way People Learn Music

New research from Upbeat Studio: music apps promise a first song in minutes, most learners eventually stop, and no platform measures who keeps playing

VALENCIA, Spain, Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- About 16 million Americans took up the guitar in two years (Fender and YouGov, 2021), and 64 percent of children who learn an instrument use YouTube, apps or online courses (ABRSM, 2021). New research from Upbeat Studio, a Valencia-based music technology company, examined more than 45 online learning platforms and the public evidence on who keeps playing. Five findings stand out.

• Speed is the promise. Eight of the 20 platforms checked name a time to a first song: two minutes, day one, five days, 30 days.
• Stopping is the norm. Two in three Americans who learned piano or drums no longer play (YouGov, 2022).
• Speed is not the reason. Half of the UK children who gave up an instrument lost interest, a quarter were too busy, and nobody says it was too slow (ABRSM, 2021).
• The business model absorbs it. Only one in four annual subscribers to an education app renews, the lowest of any category (RevenueCat, 2026).
• Nobody measures it. None of the 20 platforms publishes a retention figure for its learners.

What keeps people playing is also known. Software that reacts to every step teaches almost as well as a human tutor; grading only the result teaches far less (VanLehn, 2011). That is the shift under way: from recorded lessons to an AI coach that assesses the learner, builds and adapts a plan, and hears the playing through electronic kits, keyboards and microphones.

"Content was never the hard part of learning an instrument," said Raul Rodrigues, founder of Upbeat Studio and a drummer. "The hard part is what a good teacher does between lessons: sequencing, feedback, and knowing what to say when you want to quit. AI removes the barrier to entry. It does not remove the teacher."
