Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Logistea AB (publ) (STO:LOGI B) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 4 days. The ex-dividend date generally occurs two days before the record date, which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is an important date to be aware of as any purchase of the stock made on or after this date might mean a late settlement that doesn't show on the record date. Accordingly, Logistea investors that purchase the stock on or after the 29th of September will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 5th of October.
The company's next dividend payment will be kr00.05 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of kr0.20 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Logistea stock has a trailing yield of around 1.6% on the current share price of kr012.88. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.
Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Logistea paid out just 12% of its profit last year, which we think is conservatively low and leaves plenty of margin for unexpected circumstances. A useful secondary check can be to evaluate whether Logistea generated enough free cash flow to afford its dividend. It paid out 11% of its free cash flow as dividends last year, which is conservatively low.
It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Stocks in companies that generate sustainable earnings growth often make the best dividend prospects, as it is easier to lift the dividend when earnings are rising. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. For this reason, we're glad to see Logistea's earnings per share have risen 17% per annum over the last five years. The company has managed to grow earnings at a rapid rate, while reinvesting most of the profits within the business. This will make it easier to fund future growth efforts and we think this is an attractive combination - plus the dividend can always be increased later.
Unfortunately Logistea has only been paying a dividend for a year or so, so there's not much of a history to draw insight from.
Has Logistea got what it takes to maintain its dividend payments? We love that Logistea is growing earnings per share while simultaneously paying out a low percentage of both its earnings and cash flow. These characteristics suggest the company is reinvesting in growing its business, while the conservative payout ratio also implies a reduced risk of the dividend being cut in the future. Overall we think this is an attractive combination and worthy of further research.
On that note, you'll want to research what risks Logistea is facing. We've identified 3 warning signs with Logistea (at least 2 which don't sit too well with us), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
