On Thursday, PB Fintech Ltd. led a decline in the Indian insurance companies, distributors and lenders sector as India's insurance regulator proposed to cap commissions and tighten management fees. PB Fintech plummeted 23%, the biggest one-day decline since its launch in November 2021. Max Financial Services Ltd. dropped by up to 12%, L&T Finance Ltd., down 10%, and HDFC Life Insurance by up to 8.5%. According to analysts, the measures proposed by India's Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority on Wednesday evening could sharply reduce insurance commission income of banks and digital brokers in high-margin categories by up to 90%. The proposal aims to strengthen the industry's long-term discipline and rationalize distribution costs. Avinash Singh, an analyst at Emkay Global Financial Services Ltd., wrote in a report: “This proposal almost cuts off the 'oxygen' supply of commissions and pushes the industry into uncharted territory.” However, at the same time, he said that the regulations that will eventually be introduced may be relatively relaxed.
