White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said that the US economy is currently moving in the direction of strong growth, but some “external” factors may prevent the Trump administration from achieving the target of at least 3% growth. Hassett said at an event at the New York Economic Club on Monday that given rising productivity and wage levels in the US, the economic growth rate “should be around 4%, not 3%.” He said this was his “baseline forecast, which assumes no interference from the outside world.” Speaking about the fiscal outlook, Hassett hinted that some complex factors might hinder the achievement of Bezent's goal of reducing the fiscal deficit to 3% of GDP. When asked if the deficit rate is expected to fall to 3% at the end of Trump's term, Hassett said, “Basically, it depends on whether there are any 'force majeure' factors that will hinder the achievement of this goal.”
