Glencore, Yancoal's Hunter Valley Operations Secures Commission Nod for Coal Mine Continuation with Emissions Conditions

02:28 AM EDT, 09/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Hunter Valley Operations, a joint venture between Yancoal and Glencore (GLEN.L, GLN.JO), received approval from New South Wales' Independent Planning Commission to continue its North and South open-cut coal mines in Australia, subject to conditions on greenhouse gas emissions. The commission said Wednesday that HVO must limit coal exports to jurisdictions that have policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, maximize the use of renewable energy, and purchase carbon offsets. HVO is also required to publish a greenhouse gas mitigation plan within six months and a closure management plan within 12 months. HVO, however, noted it still needs to secure a federal government environmental nod to move forward with final approval.
