Petrobras (PBR.US) teams up with Cardano to end carbon double metering with blockchain

According to Woofun AI, Brazil's state-owned energy giant Petrobras (PBR.US) is developing in-depth technical collaboration with the Cardano Foundation and Ledger Labs to use blockchain technology to solve the long-standing problem of repeated calculation of environmental benefits in the field of sustainable aviation fuels.

This collaboration marks a key step for traditional energy giants in digitizing carbon asset management, trying to ensure the uniqueness and traceability of each unit of emission reduction through distributed ledger technology, thereby providing an underlying trust infrastructure for the green transformation of the aviation industry.

Looking at the details of the technical architecture and multi-party collaboration, the Cardano Foundation revealed on September 30 that the platform developed jointly with Petrobras and Ledger Labs under the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro has generated specific application solutions for sustainable aviation fuels and Diesel R, a renewable energy fuel brand owned by Petrobras. The core logic of the system is to resolve the confusion of rights caused by the separation of fuel buyers, users, and environmental benefit purchasers.

According to data compiled by Woofun AI, the platform standardizes environmental attributes as CS-SAF tokens and stores them on the Cardano network, which supports creation, transfer, verification and cancellation operations. Among them, the cancellation mechanism directly targets the risk of 'double payment' in cryptocurrencies to ensure that the same environmental attributes are not claimed multiple times. Passengers can obtain a certificate including flight route, distance, and allocation amount by entering departure and destination airport information. The voucher always anchors the initial fuel certificate and carries metadata that complies with CORSIA standards, enabling complete closed-loop tracking from source to terminal.

At the level of industry guidelines and disclosure regulations, the performance guidelines issued by the Sustainable Biomaterials Roundtable on June 16 clarify the boundaries of the 'bookkeeping and claim' model: the model does not change actual fuel types or token release logic, but requires airlines to disclose emissions reductions separately from operating emissions. Each participant in the industry chain can submit their own claims on the premise that they do not mislead the overall scale of emission reduction.

At the same time, the Diesel R project, which was jointly developed with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, has set up multiple checkpoints in production, transportation, and use to establish a record of the entire fuel life cycle. This design not only enhances the transparency of supply chain history, but also directly serves Class III emission reports covering indirect emissions from the enterprise value chain, enabling data from suppliers and logistics service providers to be interlinked to form a verifiable emission evidence chain.

Although the architecture demonstrates Cardano's technical potential in recording the distribution and cancellation of environmental benefits, the Cardano Foundation defines it as a proposed model for the R&D phase. Since no specific transaction scale or revenue data has been released yet, it is still difficult to quantitatively evaluate the actual commercial application degree and market penetration rate of this technical solution. This shows that the implementation of Web3 technology in the field of traditional energy carbon management is still in the early stages of verification. Its leap from conceptual prototyping to large-scale commercial deployment still needs to be supported by more substantial transaction data and further unification of industry standards.
