Coherent (COHR) shares ripped higher on Oct. 1 after the semiconductor company rolled out its breakthrough PhotonLink integrated optics platform. In its press release, COHR said PhotonLink is designed to solve power and bandwidth bottlenecks in next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
The announcement adds to momentum in Coherent stock, which is already up 67% versus the start of this year.
Coherent’s new PhotonLink platform targets the high-bandwidth requirements of AI clusters and hyperscale data centers.
By integrating Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers, silicon photonics, micro-optics, and advanced optical detectors into an end-to-end assembly, PhotonLink offers a comprehensive optical path solution across co-packaged optics (CPO) and near-packaged optics (NPO) architectures.
Crucially, the NYSE-listed firm said it already holds more than 10 customer engagements for both CPO and NPO, backed by anchor supply agreements.
With commercial revenues scheduled to ramp in Q4, investors view this platform as a high-margin sales engine that reinforces COHR stock’s dominance in optical interconnects.
Beyond PhotonLink, Coherent shares boast major competitive advantages, which make them attractive to both retail and institutional investors.
The company brings massive manufacturing scale to the table, having shipped more than 300 million InP lasers and over 1 billion optical photodetectors. Plus, it continues to expand its 6-inch InP wafer capacity to accelerate data center spending.
In its latest reported quarter, COHR reported earnings per share (EPS) of $1.74, handily beating the $1.58 consensus, and demonstrating consistent operational execution and expanding operating margins as AI data center demand compounds across the sector.
More importantly, Coherent is currently trading at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of about 8x, which makes it attractive for a company strongly positioned to ride the AI wave.
Wall Street remains bullish on COHR shares for the next 12 months.
According to Barchart, the consensus rating on Coherent sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of $407 indicating potential for a significant further rally from here.
