The Budapest Water Authority said on October 1, local time, that the water level in the Budapest section of the Danube fell to “minus 1 cm” on the same day, a record low. The water department said that the zero point on this water level scale corresponds to the lowest water level recorded during the dry water period in 1834. Therefore, a negative water level does not mean that the Danube riverbed has dried up; it only indicates that the current water level is below the 1834 low.
